Synopsis
Turning love is a
drama by Ms. Cecilia Liu which tells about
tragic love. The story began when a couple got an “accident” after a party
because of drunk. Tony and May went to Tony’s mother to tell her that May is
pregnant, however, it was not accepted by his mother because he had to continue
his study to be Doctor in America. They finally broke up their relationship
because Tony had to obey his mother.
May ran out while crying. She
suddenly bumped to Rich, her ex-boyfriend. Day by day they were getting closer,
and Rich finally proposed marriage to May. Of course May was shocked. She tell
him “I have a baby” Rich answered “I’ll raise it”, “I like smoking”, “me too.
“I like drinking”, “I love it”. So that there was no reason to avoid his asking
because she had no choice instead of hoping to Tony’s unclear expectancy.
After married, they lived
together for 5 years. Rich did not like the son. He always beaten May’s son
when drunk. In the last, he beaten the son until breeding in his head. The
neighbor took the son to the Hospital but it was full. May heard that there is a
good Doctor who has just arrived from America. The Doctor had done the surgery
succesfully. What a shock of May at the time because the Doctor who saved her
son’s life is Tony, her ex-boyfriend.
Deconstructive Theory
This essay will explore
about the characterization of May,
Rich, and Tony in the story by using deconstructive approach.
This approach was stated by
a philosopher from Aljazair, Jacques Derrida, in 1960s. Deconstruction is the
way to bring contradictions that hide behind our concepts that we believe
(Pontus, 2007). From the definition before, it could be concluded that
deconstructive is a way to read a text and trying to find the meaning beyond of
the literal meaning of the text
Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism (2003) states
that “Deconstruction theory embraces the
precept that meaning is always uncertain and that it is not the task of the
literary critic to illuminate meaning in a given text... Calling attention to breaks in the
internal logic of a literary text achieves its deconstruction. Deconstruction
itself can be deconstructed, however, and the process goes on indefinitely”.
May’s
characterization
In the story, May described as a strong woman with an
unlucky fate. It could be seen since the first time she went to tony’s house,
it was a big house which completed by luxurious furniture, there was also a
very arrogant mother who looked down at her, however, she could still say “Hello, Tony’s mother. I’m May, nice too meet you to day”. In nowadays
truth, a girl might not do such that things, a girl may permit to go home because
of scared. The next proof is May could still accept her exboyfriend to marry
her. In our daily life, if a couple broke from relationship, it should be
because of bad reason. Then the worst way might appears as anmity between the
coouple. Furthermore fact could be found in every situation Rich beaten her
son, she never angry to Rich, the only things that she did is try to ask
smoothly whether he care about their son or not. The last fact that could be
found is still show a good attitude to the person who left her when she got
pregnant. This such a noble attitude that we should not put any grudge to
someone who hurt us, because someday we might need his/hes help.
I have described May as a strong
woman with an unlucky fate. She would never being unlucky woman if she was not
a drunkard /dinker. The first of her unlucky is became pregnant because of
drunk after party with Tony. Furthermore, she got a drunkard husband because
she also a drunkard. In a reality life, it cannot be ignored that we will find
our mate according to who we are. If we want to get a best mate to be our wife
or husband, then we have to be the best. Our religion has also decided that a
good man will only marry a good woman and vice versa.
Rich’s characterization
The next character who will be
explored is Rich. In this story, Rich was described as a cruel man because
always being drunk and beat his son. By using deconstrutive, he could be judged
as a good man which has a grudge attitude. The first proof that can be found is
he could accept May to be his wife even though she was pregnant. Even in the
story Tony was described as a good man, but Rich was still more responsible
than Tony. In the real life, it is hard to find a boy who can accept a pregnant
woman to be his wife moreover the baby is not belong to him. The next proof is
he never fight or raise an issue about the son to May, it never being any
problem between them. Furthermore, he beaten the son after drunk and if the son
was ornery. The maltreating will never be done if May never let her son with
Rich whenever he got drunk. The reason of his drunk might be stressed or
depressed because he must raise a son which was not belong to him.
Tony’s characterization
The last character that will be
explored in the story is Tony, Tony left May when she got pregnant. This was actually uncaring
attitude. If semeed by deconstructive approach, then we cannot blame him as a
cruel man. It could be if he left May without any reason. However, he must obey
his mother for the sake of his future. At least two reason that he gor, the
first one was to obey his mother and the second one was the accident after
party could not be believed 100 persen because when they got drunk who could
proof that he did it? Because it happened before Tony expressed his love to May.
The message that can be concluded
from the story is always keep trying for our life. Once more, to be drunk has a
very crucial impact in our life, especially for our future. Another message
that desribed is never to hope a good husband or wife we are not a good person.
The whole message that can be concluded is always be a good person in your
life.
